BOUDOIR COLLECTION 2005 – 2010

The boudoir series was a witty and irreverent response to the discovery that actual objects, if they were flat enough and not too rigid, could be exposed directly on to a photo-silkscreen stencil like a photogram. Rather than use safer subject matter Jane chose to explore the contents of a lingerie drawer not realising at the time that this would elicit such an interesting critique that ranged from amusement and joy to disapproval and shame. Of necessity the images were life sized, but a body to be examined, desired or possessed was entirely absent focusing attention on the things themselves which took on an extraordinary, sometimes humorous, sometimes disturbing and often surreal life of their own.
Deliberately and carefully arranged on the screen to suggest movement or animation Jane described the activity simply as ‘drawing with things’ in this case the things happened to be lace gloves, silk stockings, scarves, ribbons, bras or knickers.

Intrigued, fellow female artists began to bring items into the studio for her to use, sometimes recommending titles, for example 'Heartless’ for a flimsy embroidered camisole or 'Exhibit A' for a pretty pair of knickers both of which suggested a dark back story for the images. The associations were definitely in the eyes of the beholder but the titles often nudged the viewer in that direction.

Part of the accompanying description of the collection reads: “In ‘Cadmium Red Deep’ for example, a bra and panties printed in the intense colour of the title, fly majestically across a large virgin white sheet of Fabriano paper with such liberated abandon it makes you smile to yourself. In ‘Black Basque’ a gorgeous basque spreads itself lifesize across a sheet of Somerset Satin paper like some giant winged creature, emphasising its powerful graphic shape.

While in ‘Provocative Butterfly an intensely feminine pair of frilly, split crotch panties looks very like a delicate, gauzy butterfly until you realise your mistake”
